A Challenging Start to Motherhood
I became pregnant with my first daughter naturally and experienced an uncomplicated labor and delivery at the age of 30. However, breastfeeding her was difficult. As we were getting ready to leave the hospital, my husband observed her shaking and asked for a blood test. Sadly, she was diagnosed with newborn hypoglycemia. This condition necessitated her stay in the NICU for observation and IV fluids. Because there were no rooms available, we couldn't stay overnight. This resulted in many sleepless nights without her. This experience marked the start of a difficult postpartum journey for me.
The NICU Experience
Visiting my daughter in the NICU was incredibly stressful. We went to see her three times a day. Each time, we witnessed her being prodded and poked in her heels for blood draws. These experiences were painful to watch and filled us with worry. We constantly monitored her fluctuating blood sugar levels. Thankfully, after a week of care, she was discharged.
Struggles at Home
When we got home, we faced another challenge: she refused to nurse. Over several months, we tried five different formulas, but nothing seemed effective. On top of that, she endured colic for almost a year, which was exhausting for us as new parents.
In the midst of these challenges, life presented us with another obstacle. My father-in-law was diagnosed with colon cancer and unfortunately passed away when our daughter was only two months old. This loss deeply affected us.
Family Challenges
My husband and I watched as my mother-in-law fell into a deep depression, grappling with her own health issues and ALS. Our family support was limited because we lived 600 miles away from other relatives. This distance only intensified our feelings of isolation.
During this time, I experienced sleep deprivation, postpartum rage, and anxiety. I observed my husband dealing with the loss of his father while also trying to take care of me. I felt powerless and overwhelmed.
Seeking Help
When I sought help, professionals informed me that my symptoms were "normal" because of postpartum hormonal changes. I sometimes felt ignored by healthcare providers and continued to manage my emotions on my own.
Over time, I started having weekly panic attacks. Every day felt like a struggle, and I dreaded getting up in the morning. I felt inadequate as a mother. This anxiety lasted for almost three years. It wasn't until a close friend recommended seeing a naturopath that I started to investigate my symptoms more deeply.
The Path to Healing
Seeing a naturopath opened my eyes to new possibilities. We explored simple lifestyle changes that made a significant difference. This natural approach provided me with tools to manage anxiety effectively.
Additionally, I started seeing a Cognitive Behavioral Therapist. This therapy helped me reframe my thoughts and emotions. I was also able to lean on my spirituality and faith for support during this difficult time.
During this season, I started writing small daily reflections to keep myself grounded. Those reflections eventually evolved into The Postpartum Minute, a book offering a 2-week plan for anxious moms.
Embracing a New Life
The combination of these approaches transformed my life, and I found a path toward true peace and healing. I can finally say that I feel like myself again. I hope my story serves as a reminder that it is possible to find long-term healing from postpartum struggles.
